(5MinNewsBreak.com) – A new aviation disaster has rocked America’s skies: two people were killed when two small planes collided midair at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona.
Watch the video down below.
The deadly crash highlights the dangers of uncontrolled airfields and the urgent need for better air traffic management, especially in the wake of recent deadly incidents across the country.
The collision involved a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172S, each carrying two people.
The Lancair crashed near runway 3 and burst into flames, killing both occupants. Meanwhile, the Cessna managed to land safely, with its two occupants escaping unharmed.
Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled field without an air traffic control tower.
This lack of oversight raises concerns about the safety of smaller airports across the nation, many of which operate without proper traffic management systems.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are now investigating the crash.
Their findings could have far-reaching implications for air traffic control policies at smaller airports nationwide.
This incident marks the second deadly airport crash in Arizona in just nine days, following a crash involving a plane owned by Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil that killed a pilot and injured three others.
The string of recent aviation accidents, including a collision near Reagan National Airport and a medevac jet crash in Philadelphia, points to a troubling trend in air safety that demands immediate attention from authorities.
Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti emphasized the critical role of pilot communication and vigilance in preventing such tragedies.
“All the pilots should be broadcasting on this common traffic advisory frequency. And there’s also a responsibility to see and avoid. Each pilot is responsible to see and avoid so they don’t collide with each other,” Guzzetti stated.
The town of Marana had plans to build an air traffic control tower by 2024, but the project was delayed until 2029 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This delay may have played a role in the current tragedy, raising questions about government priorities and the allocation of resources for critical infrastructure projects.
Marana Regional Airport Superintendent Galen Beem regretted the incident, saying:
“On behalf of the Town of Marana and the Marana Regional Airport, our hearts go out to all the individuals and families impacted by this event. This is an unprecedented event, and we are grateful for the swift response from the Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire District.”
As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial to examine whether budget cuts, oversight failures, or misplaced priorities contributed to this tragic event.
The safety of American citizens should always be the top priority, so a thorough review of air traffic control systems at smaller airports across the nation is in order.
The Marana Regional Airport remains temporarily closed during the investigation.
