(5MinNewsBreak.com) – President Joe Biden has sought to underscore his alleged achievements in foreign policy with a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he declared that “we cannot look away” from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
His address came amid ongoing wars in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan—conflicts that have presented significant challenges to diplomats worldwide, The Guardian notes in a report.
Speaking in New York on Tuesday, Biden presented himself as an experienced leader, mixing a message of hope with a vigorous defense of his foreign policy track record.
Although he did not provide a clear strategy for resolving the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, he utilized his extensive political experience to urge world leaders to prioritize their citizens and strive for peace.
“I’ve seen a remarkable sweep of history. Things can get better, we should never forget that, I’ve seen that throughout my career,” he stated.
Biden first addressed the situation in Ukraine, reaffirming his condemnation of Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and advocating ongoing support for Kyiv.
“We cannot grow weary,” he declared, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy watched.
“We cannot look away. We will not let up on our support for Ukraine. Not until Ukraine wins a just and durable peace,” Biden said.
He also noted that “Putin’s war has failed at his core aim,” which inadvertently strengthened NATO and led to Finland and Sweden joining the alliance.
Biden criticized Hamas for its attack on Israel on October 7 but also expressed compassion for the millions in Gaza suffering amid the Israeli military actions.
“Now is the time for the parties to finalize the terms, bring the hostages home and secure security for Israel and Gaza free of Hamas’s grip, ease the suffering in Gaza and end this war,” he asserted, earning applause from the audience.
He also touched on the escalating tensions in Lebanon, emphasizing that “a full-scale war is not in anyone’s interest” and suggesting that a diplomatic resolution remains possible, despite recent escalations.
Biden’s speech, laden with emotional undertones and a sense of diplomatic mourning, did not lay out a clear policy direction.
He paraphrased Irish poet William Butler Yeats, reflecting on the post-World War I era: “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”
However, Biden countered, “In our time, the center has held.”
“I know many look at the world today and see difficulties and react with despair, but I do not and I won’t. As leaders we don’t have the luxury,” Biden remarked.
