The blaze at SPS Technologies has forced school closures and sparked fears of air quality issues, leaving residents desperately scrambling for answers.

The fire erupted on the 300 block of Highland Avenue and quickly engulfed the 560,000-square-foot facility known for producing metal components and aerospace fasteners.

Witnesses reported an explosion within the building, followed by heavy smoke and flames visible from the warehouse roof.

As firefighters battled the inferno, questions arose about the facility’s safety record.

In a shocking revelation, the Environmental Protection Agency had fined SPS Technologies nearly $110,000 in 2023 for violations related to hazardous waste storage and marking at the site.

This negligence may have also played a part in the severity of the fire and potential environmental hazards.

Now, local schools in the Abington and Jenkintown districts are closed due to air quality concerns, and businesses within a 1-mile radius have been forced to shut down.

A shelter-in-place order has been issued for the surrounding area, disrupting the lives of law-abiding citizens.

“Smoke and particulates from this fire is filtering across the area. For this reason, a shelter in place order has been initiated and is currently in effect until this incident is under control,” police said.

The incident has also caused significant disruptions to public transportation.

For instance, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has suspended the Lansdale/Doylestown, West Trenton, and Warminster Regional Rail lines.

“This could also cause cascading delays on other parts of the system,” a SEPTA spokesperson stated.

“Please keep all of our brave first responders as well as any employees that were in the building in your thoughts and prayers and please avoid the area!” Abington Township Ward 6 commissioner Jeffrey Browne said.

In the meantime, the Abington Township Police Detective Division and the Township Fire Marshal’s office continue to investigate the incident.

Concerned citizens also demand accountability from the company and the agencies that failed to protect their community.
