Regarding the president’s peace talks, the prime minister stated that “Ukraine must be at the table in these negotiations, because anything less would accept Putin’s position that Ukraine is not a real nation.”
“We cannot have another situation like Afghanistan, where the U.S. negotiated directly with the Taliban and cut out the Afghan government,” Starmer added.
The U.K. leader plans to attend a high-level meeting in Paris with other European officials, likely to coordinate opposition to President Trump’s peace initiative.
President Trump recently announced plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and jumpstart a peace process to end the devastating conflict, catching European leaders off guard.
Despite his planes, Starmer said, “U.S. support will remain critical and a U.S. security guarantee is essential for a lasting peace, because only the U.S. can deter Putin from attacking again.”
The prime minister’s comments reveal that the U.K. expects America to continue bankrolling Europe’s defense indefinitely.
However, President Trump has made it clear that European nations must step up and shoulder more of the financial burden for their own security.
As part of his peace plans, the Trump administration is pursuing a deal with Ukraine to gain access to rare earth metals.

Meanwhile, Starmer has vowed to send billions in U.K. taxpayer money to Ukraine through 2030, ignoring alarming domestic issues.
