‘Extremely Troubling’ National Security Breach?

(5MinNewsBreak.com) – Following “extremely troubling” findings, Senator James Risch (R-ID) and Representative Mike McCaul (R-TX) disclosed why Joe Biden’s special envoy for Iran was removed from his post without explanation.

Currently pending a federal probe, former special envoy Robert Malley was suspended from his role without pay for no apparent reason.

Both lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealing that their “own investigations have uncovered” that Malley “allegedly transferred classified documents to his personal email account and downloaded these documents to his personal cell phone.”

Although the congressmen said they did not know to whom Malley intended to send the documents, they raised the alarm that a “hostile” cyber entity might have accessed his email or phone to obtain the information.

In their letters with Blinken, McCaul and Risch requested detailed answers on several issues like the volume of classified data Malley handled and his attempts to distribute it.

They also demanded to know about the potential breach by a malicious cyber actor with possible ties to the Iranian regime and whether the State Department had warned Malley about his mishandling of sensitive material.

“These allegations we have been privy to are extremely troubling and demand immediate answers,” they stated in the letter. “These allegations have substantial impact on our national security and people should be held accountable swiftly and strongly. We look forward to your immediate response.”

Although he is facing severe allegations, Malley has not been dismissed and continues on unpaid leave.

He had been under earlier scrutiny for his connections with individuals from the Iranian Experts Initiative (IEI).

The group has been accused of trying to influence Western scholars and researchers to advance Iran’s global image and objectives.

Notably, one of these individuals was a high-ranking official at the Pentagon as of October 2023.

Previously, Malley was the CEO of the International Crisis Group (ICG) from 2018 to 2021 and had ties with the organization for nearly two decades.

The ICG had agreed to a “memorandum of understanding” with an Iranian think tank in 2016, which was reportedly never disclosed to Congress.
