(DailyEmailNews.com) – Exposing yet another regrettable example of America’s failing infrastructure, California’s iconic Santa Cruz Wharf crumbled under nature’s fury.
As a $4 million renovation project literally washes away, taxpayers are left footing the bill for the disaster while Governor Gavin Newsom focuses on his political ambitions.
Specifically, a portion of the Santa Cruz Wharf dramatically collapsed during a major Pacific storm.
The collapse saw three people plunging into the dangerous waters below.
The incident also caught engineers and a project manager off guard as they inspected the wharf.
Two individuals were rescued by emergency teams, while a third managed to swim to safety.
All sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized, which is a fortunate outcome given the life-threatening conditions.
The storm packed hurricane-force winds and massive waves that battered California’s central coast with fury.
The National Weather Service warned of “life-threatening” conditions, with ocean swells potentially reaching a staggering 60 feet.
This extreme weather event forced evacuations in nearby Capitola and Rio Del Mar as residents scrambled to escape the rising flood waters.
“It’s a catastrophe for those down at the end of the wharf,” said local official David Johnston.
The collapse involved nearly 150 feet of the wharf, including public restrooms and a closed restaurant, which were seen floating down the coast.
This section was part of a $4 million renovation project that began after previous storm damage.
Now, taxpayers are left wondering if their hard-earned money quite literally went out to sea.
As of now, building inspectors are assessing the remaining structural integrity of the wharf.
This incident follows a similar collapse of the Seacliff State Beach pier last year, which points to a troubling pattern of deterioration.
“We are anticipating that what is coming toward us is more serious than what was there this morning,” warned Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley, hinting at the potential for further destruction.
