Recent findings from a Morning Consult poll reveal that Harris did not experience an increase in public support—commonly referred to as a “bump”—following the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
Despite this, she continues to maintain a four-point lead over her primary challenger on a national scale.
“Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 4 percentage points following the Democratic National Convention (48% to 44%), matching her standing before the weeklong confab in Chicago,” the polling agency reported, cited by Breitbart News.
The data implies that the Democratic National Convention, while a significant event, did not enhance Vice President Harris’ lead against the former president in the upcoming 2024 presidential race.
However, the event did have a positive effect in terms of voter satisfaction with the Democratic ticket compared to its Republican counterpart, as the campaign momentum builds.
“The Democratic National Convention hasn’t padded Vice President Kamala Harris’ advantage over her Republican opponent for the 2024 presidential race, but it has left more voters satisfied with the Democratic ticket than the alternative as the campaign kicks into high gear,” Morning Consult elaborated.
Despite the convention serving as a promotional platform for the Democratic party and its candidates, it did not translate into increased support for Harris.
Yet, it confirmed her strong positioning as the favored candidate—a scenario that might have been less certain had President Joe Biden decided to run again.
“While our head-to-head surveys show no boost in Harris’ support following the weeklong infomercial for her and her party, two things appear to remain true: it’s the Democratic nominee’s race to lose, and that would certainly not be the case were Biden still in the race. Our weekly tracking shows Harris and Walz continue to be more popular than not, and face a remarkably positive news environment, offering a stark contrast with the popularity of the Republican ticket and Biden,” the pollster added.
The phrase “remarkably positive news environment” hints at media coverage that is overwhelmingly favorable towards Harris, often neglecting critical examination of her political record, minimizing her direct interactions with media and voters, and frequently casting Donald Trump in an unfavorable light.
