(5MinNewsBreak.com) – In clear defiance of President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is pushing to make the city a sanctuary for illegals.
This move comes as city officials scramble to shield illegals from potential federal crackdowns, raising concerns about public safety and the rule of law in one of America’s largest cities.
Both Bass and City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto are speeding up the release of a ‘Sanctuary City’ ordinance that has been stalled in City Hall for over a year.
The mayor’s urgency comes as a result of Trump’s triumphant return to the White House and his promises to put strict immigration policies back in place.
Bass revealed her eagerness to cement Los Angeles’ status as a haven for illegals by saying, “I was actually surprised about that because I thought we were a sanctuary city for years.
“So what the difference is is the policies that were put in place were not permanent policies. So I imagine that the council will be voting on sanctuary cities hopefully very, very soon,” she added.
The proposed law would prevent federal immigration officials from accessing city databases and using city resources for immigration enforcement.
“At its core, a sanctuary policy is a prohibition on information-sharing between local and federal law enforcement, for the benefit of criminals who have no authority to be in the United States,” said Center for Immigration Studies director of investigations Jon Feere.
The push for sanctuary status is not limited to Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom is also preparing to oppose the upcoming Trump administration.
Newsom announced an emergency special session to Trump-proof the state by strengthening the state’s legal response to potential federal actions.
His efforts include increasing funding for the California Department of Justice to support legal challenges against federal immigration enforcement efforts.
“California is ready to fight, Whether it be our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, or climate action – we refuse to turn back the clock and allow our values and laws to be attacked,” Newsom declared.
Meanwhile, Trump has proposed completing the border wall and ending birthright citizenship as part of his plan to secure the nation’s borders.
It is worth noting that Los Angeles voters have shown growing discontent with soft-on-crime policies, recently voting out District Attorney George Gascon.
