(5MinNewsBreak.com) – Jimmy McCain, the youngest son of the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ), has criticized GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump for using Arlington National Cemetery as a backdrop for his campaign.
This came after Trump’s recent visit to the cemetery, which he used for a ceremony that marked three years since 13 servicemembers died during Joe Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Notably, Senator McCain also used the cemetery in a 1999 campaign ad.
A respected war veteran and former Vietnam POW himself, Senator McCain featured Arlington in his ad while campaigning for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination.
However, he later admitted that his campaign had not received permission to film there and recognized the mistake in a letter to the Army.
Although Trump states he was invited by the fallen servicemembers’ families, along with Biden and Kamala Harris—who did not attend—the visit sparked controversy.
There are allegations that a member of Trump’s team forcefully entered a restricted area of the cemetery and images from this visit later appeared in Trump’s campaign advertisements.
Trump has refuted these allegations, accusing Harris’ campaign of fabricating the incident.
Jimmy McCain, who serves as a first lieutenant in the Arizona National Guard, expressed his disapproval to CNN.
He highlighted how inappropriate it was to use the cemetery as a political backdrop.
“It just blows me away,” he said. “These men and women that are laying in the ground there have no choice” of whether to be a backdrop for a political campaign.
The relationship between Trump and the McCain family has been notably strained.
Trump has publicly blasted John McCain, questioning his status as a war hero and stating he preferred “people who weren’t captured.”
Jimmy McCain revealed that he recently changed his voter registration to Democrat and voiced his support for Harris in the upcoming election.
Although Jimmy’s mother, Cindy McCain, endorsed Biden in 2020, and his sister Meghan also distanced herself from Trump, Jimmy is the only one to leave the Republican Party.
Despite her critical views of Trump, Meghan McCain stated she remains committed to the Republican Party.
