(5MinNewsBreak.com) – In an appalling sequence of events in Kansas, a mother has been given a life sentence after her two-year-old son fatally shot his four-year-old sister.
At 24 years old, Mariann Belair will face a minimum of 25 years without parole following a decision made in Shawnee County District Court, as reported by the Topeka Capital-Journal, The Guardian reports.
A jury convicted Belair of aggravated child endangerment and first-degree murder in the commission of a felony this past May.
During her trial, Belair recounted an incident that occurred in October when she inadvertently placed a loaded 9mm handgun on the couch beside her while organizing a family outing.
Present in the home at the time were her four-year-old daughter, Lawrencia Perez-Belair, her two-year-old son, and her one-year-old daughter.
Belair described the situation, saying she was preparing to leave to gather food for the family and was checking the contents of her bag.
Her attention was momentarily diverted by Lawrencia, who requested a cellphone photo of the two of them together.
Deputy District Attorney Lauren Amrein presented a grave picture to the jurors, noting that the firearm remained on the couch for no less than 12 minutes before it was picked up by Belair’s son, who was nearing his third birthday, and used to tragically shoot his sister.
Amrein criticized Belair’s judgment, stating, “no reasonable person would have let the gun sit there so long with small children present.”
Further complications arose during the legal proceedings. Court documents indicate that Belair expressed frustration through a handwritten motion about her initial legal representation, which she claimed dissuaded her from accepting a plea deal.
This agreement would have significantly reduced her sentence to 10 years and three months.
Currently, a newly assigned attorney has been advocating for a retrial in hopes of overturning the previous conviction.
Parallel to this heart-wrenching case, another disturbing incident unfolded in Virginia, where a man is now hospitalized in critical condition after a similar oversight involving a firearm.
According to ABC News, the man was allegedly preparing to leave his residence when he carelessly left a loaded gun on a chair.
The firearm was subsequently accessed by his girlfriend’s two-year-old son, who accidentally discharged it, injuring the man.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved in the Virginia incident, but police investigations are ongoing, shedding light on the critical issue of firearm safety in households with young children.
