(5MinNewsBreak.com) – For devising a plan to evade U.S. laws that govern foreign lobbying, federal prosecutors blasted Hunter Biden and one of his associates.
According to recently released court documents, this was in an effort to protect then–Vice President Joe Biden from the fallout of a deal to represent a Romanian businessman charged with corruption.
The prosecutors’ response came as part of a pre-trial discussion, addressing Hunter’s lawyers’ request to keep political-corruption claims out of his upcoming tax evasion trial.
In the filings, prosecutors laid out allegations that Hunter Biden represented a Romanian real estate tycoon named Gabriel Popoviciu in order to influence U.S. policy.
Prosecutors stated they have evidence, including testimony from a business associate of Hunter.
The evidence shows that an arrangement was made to disguise the true reason behind payments to Hunet and his partners, essentially to halt a Romanian investigation into Popoviciu.
According to prosecutors, this evidence is crucial not only to prove income received by Hunter but also to show his mental state at the time.
By doing so, prosecutors counter the claims that Hunter had a diminished mental capacity due to his addiction to crack cocaine.
Prosecutors stated they would not accuse Hunter of violating Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) laws or wrongly coordinating with the Obama administration, although it appears the agreement was structured to avoid the need for Hunter to register as a foreign agent.
House Oversight Committee records suggest that Rob Walker, identified as the business associate, and his company received $3 million from Popoviciu from November 2015 to May 2017.
A large portion of these funds ended up with Hunter during the time his father was Vice President.
The forthcoming tax trial will also reference Hunter’s earnings from Ukrainian firm Burisma Holdings and Chinese company CEFC.
However, no lobbying charges linked to these payments will be pursued.
Hunter has entered a plea of not guilty to the tax charges. His trial is scheduled for early September, closely followed by his sentencing for a federal gun charge.
His foreign business ventures and a collection of emails from a laptop he abandoned are expected to play a significant role in the trial discussions.
