The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported the unrest and described that officers in riot gear used chemical agents to disperse the crowd while making several arrests.

The clash escalated as demonstrators resisted police efforts to clear the encampment, a scene captured in multiple videos posted online.

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears commented on the situation to criticize the protest’s shift toward violence.

“History shows America has been down this road before when Black people suffered greatly. We will NOT support those who cause Jews to feel absolute terror,” she said.

VCU responded to the incident by stating that the protest violated university policies and noted that many involved were not students.

“VCU respectfully and repeatedly provided opportunities for those individuals involved — many of whom were not students — to collect their belongings and leave,” it stated.

It added, “Those who did not leave were subject to arrest for trespassing. While supporting an environment that fosters protected speech and expressive activity, VCU must maintain an atmosphere free of disruption to the university’s mission.”

The demonstrators, including many students, had earlier established a “liberation zone” on campus and demanded that VCU advocate for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and denounce the U.S.’ “complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
