(5MinNewsBreak.com) – Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) changed the political game as he issued a powerful executive order directing law enforcement to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in curbing illegal immigration and increasing public safety.
The executive order establishes new 287(g) agreements allowing Virginia law enforcement to identify, detain, and deport dangerous illegal aliens in the Commonwealth.
This week, Youngkin signed Executive Order 47, making clear that Virginia will fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities to remove illegal aliens who commit crimes.
The order establishes two critical partnerships: a Virginia State Police (VSP) task force and a Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) jail enforcement program that deputizes officers to carry out immigration enforcement.
Governor Youngkin stated:
“As Governor, protecting our citizens is my foremost responsibility and today we are taking action that will make Virginia safer by removing dangerous criminal illegal immigrants from our Commonwealth. This order will allow Virginia State Police and the Department of Corrections to partner with President Trump’s administration on federal immigration enforcement. Dangerous criminal illegal immigrants should not be let back into our communities to assault, rape, and murder. They should be sent back where they came from.”
The order creates a Section 287(g) VSP Task Force with federally deputized officers specifically trained to identify and apprehend criminal illegal immigrants throughout Virginia.
It also directs VADOC to establish a Jail Enforcement Model Program to train corrections officers as Designated Immigration Officers who can process criminal illegal aliens for deportation.
Currently, 946 inmates in Virginia corrections facilities have open immigration detainers, highlighting the urgency of Youngkin’s action.
The governor emphasized that Virginia is not and will not become a sanctuary state, directing the Secretary of Public Safety & Homeland Security to ensure local and regional jails fully cooperate with ICE operations.
Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) strongly backed the measure, stating:
“We’ve seen too many tragic stories after dangerous criminals in this country illegally were put back on the streets, and this Executive Order will make sure we send them back to where they came from.”
Moreover, the bill aligns with President Trump’s “Protecting the American People Against Invasion” directive, which aims to expand nationwide 287(g) agreements.
This federal provision allows state and local law enforcement agencies to enter into agreements with ICE to assist in immigration enforcement.
Predictably, left-wing immigration attorneys immediately attacked the order. Attorney Alexander Miller claimed, “The bottom line is, this is a fear-based tactic and fear doesn’t fight crime. Trust does. This law destroys trust and puts everyone at risk.”
Youngkin’s decisive action stands in stark contrast to Democrat-run states and cities that provide sanctuary to criminal illegal aliens.
By implementing these 287(g) agreements, Virginia joins other conservative states in taking proactive measures to protect citizens.
The executive order took effect immediately upon signing, demonstrating Youngkin’s determination to put the safety of Virginians first despite inevitable pushback from open-borders advocates and the leftist immigration lobby.
