The CDC later said epidemiologic and traceback data continued to show that the lettuce had been contaminated and had made people sick. The agency also said FDA traceback work had converged on a single supplier that provided shredded iceberg lettuce used by Taco Bell locations where sick people ate.

Why This Case Drew So Much Attention

This outbreak mattered because it fit a pattern regulators know too well. Fresh produce can move through long, cross-border chains, and direct product testing often comes too late or gives no clear answer. In this case, they still moved quickly enough to name the likely source, pull product off the market, and widen the investigation as more cases appeared.
