Chevrolet just put the entire truck market on notice — the 2027 Silverado arrives with two brand-new V8 engines and a cabin that looks nothing like the truck you drove a decade ago.
Quick Take
- Chevrolet calls the 2027 Silverado 1500 the most powerful Silverado ever, backed by two all-new sixth-generation V8 engines displacing 5.7 and 6.6 liters.
- The new V8s replace the outgoing 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines, and Chevrolet claims the 6.6-liter is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class.
- Every 2027 Silverado comes standard with a 16.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.2-inch digital driver display — a massive leap from previous generations.
- Official horsepower and torque numbers have not been released, but industry sources expect the 5.7-liter to produce around 400 horsepower and the 6.6-liter to deliver near 475 horsepower or more.
Two New V8 Engines Replace a Decades-Long Lineup
Chevrolet officially revealed the 2027 Silverado 1500 in June 2026, and the headline was clear. Two all-new V8 engines anchor the truck’s powertrain story. The 5.7-liter V8 replaces the long-running 5.3-liter, and the larger 6.6-liter V8 takes over from the 6.2-liter.
Both are built on General Motors’ new sixth-generation small-block architecture — the same engine family that debuted in the Corvette Grand Sport earlier this year.[1]
The jump in displacement matters more than it might seem on paper. The 5.3-liter made 355 horsepower in the outgoing truck. Industry sources and pre-launch leaks suggest the new 5.7-liter will produce around 400 horsepower.[13] That is a meaningful gain for daily hauling and towing.
The 6.6-liter is expected to push even further — estimates range from 475 to 500 horsepower — making it the most powerful naturally aspirated light-duty truck V8 on the market.[15]
Chevrolet Has Not Released the Final Numbers — Here Is Why That Matters
Chevrolet confirmed the engines exist and said they deliver more power and torque than before. But the company has not published official horsepower, torque, towing, or fuel economy figures.[2] That gap between the bold marketing claim and the missing data is worth paying attention to.
Automotive marketing is governed by truth-in-advertising rules that require superlative claims — like “most powerful ever” — to be backed by real evidence before they go public. Technically accurate statements can still mislead consumers if the full picture is not clear.
The Cabin Gets a Full Overhaul That Rivals Luxury Trucks
The interior story is just as big as the engine story. Every 2027 Silverado now comes standard with a 16.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.2-inch digital driver display.[6] The ZR2 and High Country trims add an 11.5-inch front passenger screen — a feature Ram trucks introduced first.
The 2027 Silverado also gets the first panoramic sunroof ever offered on the nameplate. These are not minor updates. They represent a full rethinking of what a work truck’s interior should feel like.

Chevrolet also simplified the trim lineup to seven levels: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Silverado, Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country.[4] Three of those seven trims are lifted off-road variants, which tells you where buyer demand has been pushing the market.
The standard 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the segment-exclusive 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel both return, giving buyers four total engine choices. A 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard across the board.[5]
What the Silverado Still Needs to Prove Before You Buy
The 2027 Silverado looks strong on paper. Bigger engines, more tech, a refreshed design, and three off-road trims signal that Chevrolet is swinging hard at Ford and Ram. But real-world towing capacity, fuel economy, and final pricing are still unknown.
Edmunds estimates the truck will start just below $40,000, with fully loaded ZR2 and High Country trims pushing past $80,000.[2] Production starts later in 2026.
Until independent testers get behind the wheel and verify those power claims, the “most powerful Silverado ever” tag remains a promise — a compelling one, but still a promise.
