Amazon just rebranded its space internet project and is asking federal regulators for permission to launch thousands more satellites than originally planned.

A Decade-Old Bet Now Reaching Orbit
Amazon announced Project Kuiper years ago with one goal: build a low Earth orbit satellite network that brings broadband internet to places fiber and cable never reach.
The FCC approved the plan in 2020, giving Amazon the green light to deploy and operate 3,236 satellites across three orbital layers, spaced between 590 and 630 kilometers above Earth. That approval set a deployment clock running, one Amazon has spent the last five years racing to beat.

The first real satellites launched in April 2025, when a rocket carrying 27 Kuiper spacecraft lifted off from Florida. Reuters reported the launch marked the start of a long-awaited rollout meant to challenge SpaceX’s dominant Starlink service.
Since then, Amazon has added hundreds more satellites through repeated launches, building toward the network Jeff Bezos first pitched as a way to connect underserved communities worldwide.
From Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo
In November 2025, Amazon dropped the Project Kuiper name and rebranded the whole operation as Amazon Leo. The system now runs on more than 3,000 satellites connected by high-speed laser links, tied to ground stations and fiber networks around the world.
The new name signals Amazon is moving past the experimental phase and treating this as a real consumer product, not just a research project.
Amazon Leo satellites use optical inter-satellite links, essentially infrared lasers, to pass data between spacecraft at speeds up to 100 gigabits per second before it reaches the ground.
That kind of speed matters because it lets Amazon route traffic across the globe without waiting on ground-based internet backbones for every hop. It is the same basic idea Starlink pioneered, now Amazon’s turn to prove out at scale.
The Race Against Starlink
Make no mistake, this is a business fight as much as a technology one. Starlink has a multi-year head start and tens of thousands of satellites already serving customers.
Amazon’s $10 billion bet aims squarely at that same market: consumers, businesses, and government agencies who need reliable internet outside cities and suburbs. Whoever wins more customers first likely locks in a durable advantage in rural and remote broadband.
Under its FCC license, Amazon must launch and operate half its constellation by a set deadline, with the full 3,236 satellites required soon after. That regulatory pressure explains the breakneck launch pace.
Company trackers show hundreds of Leo satellites already active in orbit, a fraction of the full constellation but a meaningful head start compared to where the program stood just two years ago.
What Comes Next: An Even Bigger Constellation
Beyond the original 3,236-satellite plan, reports indicate Amazon has filed a new application seeking permission for a mega-constellation of more than 5,000 direct-to-device satellites, a system that could let phones connect straight to satellites without a special dish.
If approved, this second wave would sit on top of the existing Leo network rather than replace it, pushing Amazon’s total satellite count well past what any single company besides SpaceX currently operates.
For rural Americans stuck with slow or nonexistent broadband, more competition in orbit is unambiguously good news. A second serious player pushing prices down and coverage up gives families and small businesses real choice instead of a single provider’s take-it-or-leave-it terms.
Whether Amazon hits its deadlines remains to be seen, but the direction of travel -more satellites, more competition, more coverage- is one worth rooting for.
