Story Highlights
- Amazon is paying up to $51 per customer after the FTC lawsuit over deceptive Prime enrollment tactics.
- Automatic refunds rolling out through December 2025 for clearly eligible victims.
- Settlement covers customers trapped between June 2019 and June 2025.
- The additional claims process opens on December 24 for those not receiving automatic payments.
Amazon’s Deceptive Practices Finally Exposed
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2023 lawsuit revealed what many Americans had suspected for years: Amazon deliberately made it difficult for customers to avoid Prime subscriptions and nearly impossible to cancel them.
The tech behemoth used what the FTC called “challenged enrollment flows” that tricked users into signing up through confusing web pages and checkout processes. This represents exactly the kind of corporate manipulation that hurts working families and demonstrates why we need vigorous enforcement against big tech overreach.

Automatic Payments Now Rolling Out
Amazon began issuing automatic refunds to eligible Prime members between November 12 and December 24, 2025. Christopher Bissex from the FTC confirmed that customers who clearly qualify won’t need to take any action to receive their payments.
Those eligible for automatic refunds signed up for Prime or unsuccessfully tried to cancel through Amazon’s deceptive enrollment systems and used no more than three Prime benefits within any 12-month period during the eligible timeframe.
Qualification Requirements and Timeline
Only customers who signed up for Amazon Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, are eligible to receive refunds under this settlement. The FTC structured the process to prioritize the most obvious victims first through automatic payments, while customers who don’t accept automatic refunds can submit claims starting December 24, 2025. These customers will receive claim-filing notices no later than January 26, 2026, ensuring no eligible victim gets left behind.
Payment Methods and Deadlines
Eligible customers will receive refunds up to $51 through PayPal or Venmo, which must be accepted within 15 days. Those preferring traditional checks should ignore the digital payment option, prompting Amazon to mail a check to their default shipping address.
The FTC emphasizes that customers who receive checks must cash them within 60 days to claim their settlement funds. This structured approach ensures customers have multiple options for receiving the refunds they are rightfully owed.
