IMPORTANT RECALL ALERT: Marking another major food safety failure impacting American families, about 365,000 pounds of tainted turkey bacon have been yanked from store shelves.
Announced by Kraft Heinz, the nationwide recall targets turkey bacon products shipped not only across the United States but also internationally.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) classified the recall as Class I, its highest risk category.
The designation indicates a “high risk of serious health consequences or death” due to potential listeria contamination.
This massive withdrawal involves hundreds of thousands of pounds of fully cooked turkey bacon produced between April 24 and June 11 at Kraft Heinz’s Newberry, South Carolina facility.
The contamination was discovered through Kraft Heinz’s own laboratory testing.
The affected products include various Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Original packages with specific use-by dates and lot codes, all bearing the USDA mark of inspection.
The potentially dangerous products were distributed nationwide and even reached the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.
Listeria contamination poses serious risks to vulnerable Americans, particularly pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and those with compromised immune systems.
Purdue University food science professor Haley F. Oliver warned of the risks of listeria.
She stated, “Listeria monocytogenes is a common microorganism that can be found in the natural environment, for example, in soil. There are many factors that determine if someone gets listeriosis—a listeria infection.”
“In most instances, an immunocompromised person, so young, old, pregnant or otherwise immunocompromised, must eat contaminated food. The number of bacteria resulting in infection and the amount of time before illness varies considerably,” she added.
The bacteria can cause symptoms ranging from fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea to more severe complications, including headaches, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions.
What makes listeria particularly dangerous is its ability to grow even at refrigerator temperatures.
A company spokesperson said:
“At Kraft Heinz, nothing matters more to us than the safety of our products and the well-being of the families who trust them. [W]e issued a voluntary recall of select Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon products due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. [W]e have received no consumer reports of illness. In line with our safety protocols, we are actively working with all retail partners and distributors to remove the potentially impacted product from circulation.”
This is not the only recent listeria scare affecting American families. In May, Fresh & Ready Foods issued a similar recall, highlighting ongoing food safety concerns across the nation.
Consumers who purchased the affected turkey bacon are urged not to consume these products under any circumstances.
The recalled items should either be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased.
Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming potentially contaminated food should seek immediate medical attention.
Kraft Heinz has established a consumer hotline for concerned customers to get more information about the recall.
The company claims to be collaborating with public health authorities to take appropriate action.
