Scientists on the exploration vessel Nautilus were scanning an underwater mountain near Darwin Island when something strange slid across the video feed: a tiny, bright blue octopus walking the seafloor nearly 6,000 feet down.[2][3]

The team used the remotely operated vehicle to gently collect the animal, then kept exploring and recorded two more that looked identical.[2][3] Back at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galápagos, researchers sorted through dozens of deep-sea specimens until the blue golf ball of an octopus stopped them cold.[2][3]
It did not match any known cataloged species, so they sent detailed photos to octopus specialist Janet Voight at the Field Museum in Chicago for a verdict.[2][3]
From “weird blue octopus” to official new species
Voight knew immediately they had found something special, because decades of studying octopus anatomy had never produced anything quite like this specimen.[3]
The preserved animal—about the size of a golf ball—traveled from the Galápagos to Chicago for closer study.[2][3] Researchers used high-resolution scans to peer through the preserved tissue and examine organs and mouthparts in three dimensions, without destroying the only specimen they had.[2]
Those scans revealed a combination of traits that did not fit any existing species: stubby arms, a single row of suckers on each arm, smooth nearly pigment-free skin along the back, and no ink sac at all.[2][3]
The internal anatomy, including the mouth structures, allowed Voight’s team to place it within the Megaleledonidae family, whose members are usually much larger and typically associated with cold Southern Ocean waters rather than equatorial Galápagos depths.[1][2][3] That mismatch alone signaled how incomplete our mental map of the deep sea really is.[1][2]
Life nearly a mile down, designed to stay hidden
The new species, formally named Microeledone galapagensis, lives at roughly 5,800–5,900 feet near an underwater mountain by Isla Darwin, at the far northern edge of the Galápagos archipelago.[1][2][3]
