Deadly Confrontation Over Mail Delivery
Police allege Ceja Alvarez confronted Joss and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, on June 1, 2025, as the couple checked their mail at their San Antonio residence. The home had previously been burned down in January, adding another layer of tragedy to the case.
According to Kern de Gonzales, the shooter yelled “violent homophobic slurs” before opening fire on the couple. This eyewitness account raises serious questions about the motive behind this senseless act of violence.
Years of Armed Neighbor Disputes
Friends and neighbors revealed that Joss and Ceja Alvarez had been locked in heated arguments for years before the fatal shooting. Local residents told KENS-TV that the two men had previously confronted each other while armed with weapons, though these earlier encounters had not turned violent.
This pattern of escalating disputes paints a picture of a neighborhood conflict that spiraled completely out of control, ultimately costing an innocent man his life.
Hate Crime Investigation Remains Unclear
San Antonio police initially stated there was no evidence the shooting was related to Joss’ sexual orientation, but Police Chief William McManus later retracted that statement as “premature.”
The investigation into whether this constitutes a hate crime continues, though the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office declined to provide additional details.
Under Texas law, hate crime designations serve as sentencing enhancements rather than separate charges, meaning Ceja Alvarez faces the most serious applicable charge under current state statutes.
Beloved Voice Actor’s Legacy
Jonathan Joss gained widespread recognition voicing John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular animated series “King of the Hill,” which aired for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. He had already contributed work to the show’s reboot, which premiered in August 2025.
Joss also appeared in “Parks and Recreation” as Chief Ken Hotate and had roles in two episodes of “Tulsa King” in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of memorable characters that brought joy to millions of Americans.
